Using Computer Simulations to Explore the History of Astronomy

European Science Education Research Association Event
Aug 31, 2009 - Sep 04, 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey

This workshop will focus on a method for introducing the history of astronomy into science teaching.  We will discuss how EJS simulations can be used to help students visualize and explore astronomical phenomena and the theories proposed to explain these phenomena from the Ancient Greeks to Isaac Newton.

Participants will have an opportunity to examine several simulations and to work through a hands-on activity in which they will use simulations of the Copernican system to measure the size of planetary orbits.  Participants will also have a chance to create their own simulation using the Easy Java Simulations package.

Workshop simulations are available from http://facultyweb.berry.edu/ttimberlake/Copernican/.
