This simulation shows the (x,z) projection of an idealized hydrogen atom wave function. It is the solution to the Schrödinger equation for an electron confined by a 1/r2 Coulomb force and it shows the probability amplitude of finding an electron in a particular state defined by three integers n, l, and m are known as the principal, angular momentum, and angular momentum projection quantum numbers.
