Tracker 6.3.3 Shows Incomplete Track Data and Freezes on Load thread

Hello,

I am having problems with Tracker 6.3.3 on Linux Mint 22.2.

Sometimes Tracker behaves exactly as expected. Other times, however, Tracker only places the first point from the autotracker in the tables and graphs, and no further points -- or it does not place any points at all, neither in the tables nor in the graphs.
The points do exist, though: I can see them in the image as markers, trails, etc.

If I save the *.trk project and open it again, the points then appear correctly in the tables and graphs (but newly created tracks again show the same problem).

I could live with this issue, but Tracker often *freezes when opening .trk files.

Under Linux Mint 21.3, I did not notice these problems.

Unfortunately, neither Tracker's debug log nor the debug output when starting Tracker from the shell provides any useful information about what is going wrong.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this, or how I could further investigate/debug the problem?

Btw: Is it intended behavior that only tracks of the same type can be exported at the same time?
For example, exporting either Point Mass coordinate data or Distance track angle data, but not a mixture of both.

A quick update:

Unfortunately, the problem is still present in Tracker 6.3.4.

I did some experimenting with the Java environment variables and found that adding the following line to tracker.sh seems to help:

export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true"

Interestingly, this fixes two issues on my Mint 22 systems:

Saved .trk files can be opened without Tracker freezing. (Files created without this setting still cause problems.)
Newly tracked data are immediately displayed correctly in the tables and graphs.

On my systems, this workaround is necessary with Linux Mint 22.x and the corresponding Ubuntu 24.04 LTS releases. I did not encounter any of these issues with Linux Mint 21.x.

This might indicate a Java2D rendering issue or some interaction with the newer graphics stack. I'd be interested to know whether others can reproduce this behavior.

Another update:

Unfortunately, the problem is still present in Tracker 6.3.4.

I experimented with the Java environment variables and initially thought that adding

export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true"

to tracker.sh improved the situation. At first, it seemed to prevent Tracker from freezing when opening saved .trk files, and newly tracked data appeared to be displayed correctly in the plots and tables.

However, after more extensive testing, I'm no longer convinced that this is a real fix. Other GUI inconsistencies still occur--for example, after adding a calibration stick, the data table may stop updating correctly, and adding or removing table columns no longer works as expected. Editing functions or renaming them or params is also broken.

At this point, I suspect that the Java option merely changes the timing of the problem or delays its onset rather than fixing the underlying issue. The only consistent improvement I can confirm is that the 2D plots seem to remain visible.

The underlying problem is therefore still present on my systems running Linux Mint 22.x and the corresponding Ubuntu 24.04 LTS releases, whereas I did not encounter these issues with Linux Mint 21.3.

I am not using autotracker, but I have been observing the freezing issue on Kubuntu Linux 24.04 for quite a while. Unfortunately your suggestion of setting export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true" does not make a difference on my machine. More often than not, Tracker will freeze when I open a .trk file via "File" - "Open" - "File Chooser...", or double-click the .trk file.

However, launching Tracker and then dragging the .trk file from the file manager to the Tracker window appears to work. Also, .trz projects have never caused Tracker to freeze, regardless of how the file is opened.

The fact that opening saved projects can freeze further supports the idea that the GUI event system is getting stuck rather than the tracking engine itself failing.
