This resource is a set of 20 interactive Java simulations that depict optical illusions based on movement.  Included are a variety of spinning disks, color wheels of varying patterns, and a Moire pattern generator.  This item is part of a larger collection of tutorials by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory relating to Optics and Microscopy for beginning and advanced learners.

Please note that this resource requires Java.

Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics & You - Optical Illusions:

Contains Molecular Expressions: Optical Illusions - Color Wheel #8

This Java simulation is a movement-based optical illusion featuring three lines of color which rotate within a circle.  Users can control the speed of rotation, producing illusions of pentagons and octagons.  When spun fast enough, the lines appear to be a large square.

Contains Molecular Expressions: Optical Illusions - Color Wheel #7

This Java simulation is a movement-based optical illusion featuring three green lines of varying hue which rotate within a circle.  Users can control the speed of rotation, producing illusions of stars, circles, and tic-tac-toe layouts.

relation by Bruce Mason
Contains Molecular Expressions: Optical Illusions - Color Wheel #12

This Java simulation is a movement-based optical illusion featuring a black and white circular pattern.  As users control the speed of rotation, the interior portions of the pattern appear to be spinning in different directions.

relation by Bruce Mason
Contains Molecular Expressions: Optical Illusions - Color Wheel #11

This Java simulation is a movement-based optical illusion featuring a black-and-white-patterned circle which can be spun.  As users control the speed of rotation, the illusion of color will appear at the highest speeds.
