This interactive homework problem is an exercise in applying the Biot-Savart Law to a specific geometry. Students must determine the magnitude of the magnetic field at the center of a loop of current. The problem is accompanied by a sequence of questions designed to encourage critical thinking and conceptual analysis. Specific guidance is given to help students choose an appropriate co-ordinate system in setting up the integral.
This item is part of a larger collection of interactive problems developed by the Illinois Physics Education Research Group. Each interactive tutorial uses a Socratic dialog "question sequence" to promote conceptual understanding and help students develop independent problem-solving skills. Immediate feedback is given through the entire process, continuing through the quantitative analysis.
