This interactive homework problem shows a coherent beam of photons incident on a double slit. Students are asked to duplicate the interference/diffraction pattern of photons using electrons instead. The slit width, space between slits, and distance to screen are all given in the problem. Finally, students must determine the kinetic energy of one of the electrons.
This problem is accompanied by a Socratic-dialog "help" sequence designed to encourage critical thinking as users do a guided conceptual analysis before attempting the mathematics. It is part of a larger collection of interactive problems developed by the Illinois Physics Education Research Group.
