This AAPT Digi Kit blends physics and engineering as students use thrust curves to explore impulse and predict the motion and maximum height of a model rocket. This module was inspired by an article in The Physics Teacher magazine, "Measuring Model Rocket Engine Thrust Curves", authored by Kim Penn and William Slaton. The lesson plan explains how to use a simplified test bracket and a force probe to record data, calculate impulse, and predict how high the rocket will go. The Digi Kit supplementary resources include model rocket simulations, hands-on classroom activities, interactive tutorials, and background information on model rocketry. As a whole, the Digi Kit promotes understanding of the full process of engineering design, which involves much more than just building. Students will come to appreciate that practicing engineers don't jump into building expensive full-scale structures. They use computation and mathematics to model and predict optimal design solutions.
