Tracking Solar Energetic Particles from Coronal Mass EjectionsThis lecture tutorial is the linchpin of the Solar Energetic Particles DigiKit. Students will view authentic coronograph images of a CME event captured by NASA Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), measure identifiable patterns in the image sets, and calculate the point from which the CME originated. They will then examine proton flux graphs recorded by a geostationary detector (GOES) and use mathematics to relate kinetic energy of the phenomenon to mass and speed. Also included in this set of instructional materials is a Pre-Tutorial to prepare students at all levels to engage in a study of CME motion and trajectory.
