Physics Classroom Concept Builder: What's Up and Down with KE and PE?This new digital tool challenges students to use an understanding of kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy to analyze a physical situation and to determine if the KE and the PE increases, decreases, or remains the same. Learners must look carefully for at specific wording of the problem and use these text clues to determine what's happening to the KE and PE over the course of the motion. There are 12 situations to analyze across three levels of ability, allowing students to level up from Apprentice to Wizard. Incorrect answers are no problem; a similar scenario will be presented for additional chances. Question-specific help is provided for each of the 12 situations.
Build a Wind TurbineThis hands-on project provides step-by-step instructions for building a vertical axis wind turbine in secondary classrooms. It could be a great way to integrate energy conversion and engineering design in the secondary classroom. Wind turbines work by using an internal generator to convert the mechanical energy of the spinning turbine shaft into electricity. This particular project is modeled after the Savonius rotor system, which uses uses drag -- not lift -- to capture energy for making electricity. Although it isn't as efficient as a conventional horizontal axis turbine, it is much easier to build.
Build a Hydro GeneratorThis maker project gives step-by-step instructions for building a water-powered generator from plastic spoons. The model closely resembles real micro-hydro designs, and can produce enough electricity to light a small light bulb. The 9-page construction plans may be freely downloaded and are well organized for first-time builders. Comprehensive background information is provided on water power and renewable energy as well. All materials can be readily purchased from grocery or hardware stores. It would be appropriate for a unit on energy transformation in Physics First or 9th Grade Physical Science courses.
