The Astronomy Center has provided educational resources to introductory astronomy educators since 2003. Over the past 20 years, the rapid pace of discovery has rendered some of our linked resources obsolete. Thus, the Astronomy Center will be decommissioned on March 1, 2022. Our highest quality resources will be retained on ComPADRE.org.
This SDSS project serves as introductory material for astronomy image processing. It first stablishes a theoritical foundation in which the process of image retrieval is explained, going through the operation of a Charged Couple Device (CCD) and the filter system. Then, using the image processing software IRIS, the user is asked to obtain images from the SDSS database and manipulate them, in order to obtain Tricolor Images (in different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum) and to find Asteroids.
