Conference Overview

This 2.5 day meeting will cover techniques, experiments, and curricular ideas for post-introductory undergraduate labs, whether they are independent or tied to a lecture course.  The conference will include invited speakers on a variety of topics, presentations by commercial vendors, and lots of opportunities for hands-on experiences with experimental equipment.

Meeting participants will be able to present information about their own courses and/or experiments.

Conference Goals

The conference will bring together faculty and technical staff involved with intermediate/advanced undergraduate labs to present, discuss,and demonstrate their lab curricula, teaching methods, and experiments. The conference will be valuable to instructors of post-introductory labs at two-year colleges, undergraduate institutions, and research universities.

Attendees should come away from the conference with:
  • An understanding of the wide variety of curricula used for advanced labs
  • A knowledge of and hands-on experience with new or improved experiments and techniques
  • Methods for assessing student understanding in advanced laboratories, including writing
  • Techniques for integrating undergraduate research with advanced labs
  • Knowledge of commercially available equipment appropriate for advanced labs
  • A broader view of teaching strategies and pedagogy for the laboratory
