Abstract Title: W13: Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy for an advanced undergraduate (biophysics) lab course
Abstract: The workshop will introduce participants to the Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) module that is a part of our senior biophysics lab course, and has recently been incorporated also into our junior optics lab course.  The workshop will have three parts:

1. Introduction to FCS.  A brief lecture will be given, describing the fundamentals of FCS.  This includes the concepts of molecular fluorescence (with demonstration), diffusion, confocal detection (including the diffraction limit) and time-based intensity correlation.  These topics will be introduced in the context of the student experience with this lab.
2. Introduction to our FCS instrument.  Via real-time video link, teaching technician David Lee will introduce participants to the FCS instrument, which is not portable.  He will show the different optical components on the table, demonstrate how to insert a sample chamber, align the confocal detection onto the photomultiplier tube, and show what the LabVIEW interface looks like.
3. Opportunity for hands-on experience + discussion.  Participants will make and load sample chambers that would be used in the FCS instrument. Sample data will also be provided to workshop participants for off-line analysis.
