This video demonstration illustrates the working of a Faraday's cage. Tinsel in the proximity of a Van de Graaff generator gets repelled due to the electrostatic potential generated. A metal cage made of aluminium around the tinsel protects the tinsel from the electrostatic potential. The charge in the cage arranges in such a way that the net field in the interior of the cage cancels. The video includes a short explanation of the demonstration.

This video is part of a video demonstration collection created by the Physics Department at MIT.
