This is a set of instructional materials developed at the University of Virginia to support teaching a unit on waves and oscillation. It is intended for students who have some preparation in calculus fundamentals, and would also serve as content support for teachers who desire a refresher on the topic. Resources include lecture notes on waves in one, two, and three dimensions, sound waves, simple harmonic motion, boundary conditions, wave analysis, and wave properties. Look for links to related interactive simulations, problem sets, and study sheets for students. Of particular interest are the downloadable animated spreadsheets on addition of traveling waves.
This resource is part of the full Physics 152 course, which covers topics typically included in a second-semester introductory physics class. SEE RELATED ITEMS ON THIS PAGE for a link to the full set of course materials. Please note that this resource requires Shockwave, or Flash.
This resource is part of a Physics Front Topical Unit.
Topic: Periodic and Simple Harmonic Motion
Unit Title: Teaching About Oscillation Teachers who want a refresher on the topic of oscillating motion will appreciate these illustrated lecture notes on pendulum action and damped driven oscillators. Be sure not to miss the animated spreadsheets in Excel format, which can be customized and used in the classroom. Also included are sets of printable student study sheets and problem sets on oscillations. Link to Unit:
