This text is designed for an introductory calculus-based physics course for science or engineering students.  Problem solving is taught through an instructional strategy that consists of three steps.  An initial analysis includes a description of the problem situation, a summary of the goals, and a re-description of the situation in technical terms.  The problem is then decomposed into sub-problems.  The third step consists of checking the solution.  The steps are repeated if necessary.

Combined with its workbook, it forms a coherent introduction to basic mechanics.
