Unable to Open Read and Import Video or Tracker files

 I have not been able to Open, or Import Videos or Experiments in Tracker 6.1.6. Invariably there is an File Name Error that says that the fileneme cannot begin with the character "&" - which it does not. I tried to turn the computer off then on again and I tried uninstalling and re-installing. No luck.

Then I downloaded 6.1.5 from the comPADRE collections.  Different error message but the same result. Whether the file is an experiment or MOV provided with the installation. I get an error stating the the video file is not supported (evenn though is a *.MOV supplied in the installation bundle) the n a blank screen.

grateful for any suggestions or help.

Status Report.

I installed Tracker 6.1.6 on a separate W10 machine with an older Core i5 processor, less memory and inbuilt Corei5 graphics.

The video and Track files seem to open and Tracker seems to run OK on that machine.

I can't imagine what's making the difference.

If I work it out I will post again - If anyone knows what it is - then I would be happy to hear it.

The problem as it turns out is that the Tracker Installation Routine saves the sample video and experiment files to the "Documents" folder in the user account directories of the currently loged on user.

But the correct LONG name (path name) for the "Documents" folder is:

C:/Users/{User Account Name}/Documents/Tracker/Videos (or Experiments)/{File Name}

Tracker seems to regard all of the characters in that PATH name as the "File Name"  and checks whether any part of that PATH name contains special characters.

In my case the {User Account Name} part of the path name has a "&" in it causing the error and Trcker refusing to open/import the files.

Moving the Files to the Desktop did not fix the problem because the Desktop is a directory called

C:/Users/{User Account Name}/Desktop/  ie the long filename of files on my Desktop have the offending "&" as well.

My solution for now was to create a Tracker directory in the root directory...

I might in the future change the name of the Main User Account.

I hope thatthis is useful to someone else.
