Yes, you can use Tracker for research purposes. No special procedure needed. Please do not redistribute it.
If the motion of the balloon is directly toward the camera it will be very difficult to get any accurate data. If the motion is at an angle you may be able to use a perspective filter to correct the image. See Video Filters in Tracker help.

Hello Doug , Thank you so much Doug. Just another question, I wanted to know if we have any ways to play the side and the front view of the camera simultaneously for video analysis . This will be very useful in my research . I would appreciate it if you could throw any light on this . Also I wanted to know if we have any limitations on pixels and contrast in the software. Regards, Vijay
Sorry, there's no way to play two videos simultaneously. I'm not sure what you mean by limitations on pixels and contrast, but I think the answer is no. Marking points is at the sub-pixel level. There is a brightness/contrast video filter that you may find useful. Doug

Hello again Doug , I am facing a small problem. I am trying export and save my tracker clip as a video clip. But when I open it , because it is a quick video the video time is almost less than a second . It closes automatically when it opens (or rather it plays within a fraction of a second and ends).Could you help me to reduce the frame rate lesser than 1 when trying to save it. Thanks in advance Vijay
This sounds like a problem with your video player. You should be able to set it to not close the video after playing. If you want to export the video with a lower frame rate, just open the clip settings and set the frame rate to the desired rate before exporting. The exported video will then have that (slower) frame rate. Doug
