I tried to install tracker on the machines in our student lab. These are ~2010 era iMacs running OSX 10.6.8. I updated Java (SE 6) using the OS software update, downloaded tracker, installed, etc. The installer runs, everything looks good, but when I run Tracker, it stalls with the progress bar at 100%. I have attached the start log. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I don't know what the problem is (the start log looks normal), but can you start Tracker by double-clicking either the tracker_starter.jar or the tracker.jar directly? They are located in Applications/Tracker.app/Contents/Resources/Java (you will need to ctrl-click on the Applications/Tracker icon and choose Show Package Contents to see the Contents folder).
If one of these works, maybe you could make an alias to the file and put it on the desktop or maybe even the launch bar at the bottom??
