This item is an interactive Java simulation relating to digital imaging with optical microscopes. Digital cameras that employ a charge-coupled device (CCD) require careful adjustment and white/black balancing to produce acceptable image quality. Given a menu of 15 various specimens, the user can explore how the digital image is influenced by adjusting white balance and black balance.
This item is part of a larger collection of materials on optics and microscopy developed by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Florida State University. See Related Materials on this page for a link to the full tutorial on Digital Image Processing.
