This item is an interactive Java simulation for introductory physics students on the topic of color. It explores how individual subtractive primary colors can be separated from a full-color photograph and then be reassembled to create the original scene. The mouse cursor may be used to superimpose color separations over one another. As additional separations are added, the resulting image exhibits the realism of a color photograph.
This item is part of a larger collection of materials on optics and microscopy developed by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. See Related Items on this page for a link to the full tutorial on Primary Colors by the authors.

This is the full tutorial by the same authors on primary colors. It includes an introduction to primary additives and subtractives, plus the basic physiology of human color perception. Included are links to three additional Java simulations on the topic.
