This interactive problem presents an accelerating car with a ball of known mass hanging by a string from its ceiling. Given the string displacement from the vertical, learners must determine the magnitude of the car's acceleration. A user-activated "help" sequence promotes understanding of this situation relative to positions both inside and outside the car. Included are a step-by-step conceptual analysis, free-body diagrams, and explanation of math applications. Immediate feedback is received for both correct and incorrect responses. This resource is part of a larger collection of interactive problems for introductory physics.
