The Astronomy Center has provided educational resources to introductory astronomy educators since 2003. Over the past 20 years, the rapid pace of discovery has rendered some of our linked resources obsolete. Thus, the Astronomy Center will be decommissioned on March 1, 2022. Our highest quality resources will be retained on ComPADRE.org.
The purpose of this SDSS project is to introduce students to the color classification system and its importance to astronomy. A complete review is done on the magnitude scale and how it leads to colors. Then a link is made between the light recieved by telescopes and the temperature of the source. Finally, color-color diagrams are introduced as a tool to verify if a star is a perfect thermal source, since radiation curves can be deceiving.
