The Astronomy Center has provided educational resources to introductory astronomy educators since 2003. Over the past 20 years, the rapid pace of discovery has rendered some of our linked resources obsolete. Thus, the Astronomy Center will be decommissioned on March 1, 2022. Our highest quality resources will be retained on ComPADRE.org.
The main objective of this project is to introduce the student to modern cosmology. The first part of the website explains the most recent perceptions of the universe and how it is expanding. To prove it, the student is asked to follow Edwin Hubble's steps, by measuring magnitudes and redshifts of galaxies, plotting them in a Hubble Diagram and arrive at the same conclusion he did: the universe is in fact expading, and there doesn't seem to be a center since all galaxies appear to be distributed uniformly. The final part of the project explains the concept of the Big Bang and a technique to calculate absolute distances, using redshifts and the Hubble constant, derived from the expansion of the Universe.
