An Introduction to the Lock-In Amplifier and a Mie Scattering Experiment
written by Jessie Petricka
A three week sequence begins with an introduction to the lockin amplifier and builds to an automated measurement of Mie scattering. In week one, the lockin introduction builds familiarity using a LabVIEW simulation and a pre-recorded CD. Students then use the lockin to measure a frequency response curve of an acoustical resonance in a glass beaker. Then, as a prelude to a precision measurement, they also do an optical measurement of ND filters. In week two, the Mie scattering is automated using LabVIEW with GPIB and a stepper motor controller. Finally, in week three the students perform chi-square data analysis of their scattering data to find the diameter of the scattering media.
