| Description: | The REU program offered by the Nanoscale Science & Engineering Center (NSEC) headquartered at Northwestern University provides undergraduates from around the country opportunities to engage in nine weeks of full-time research over the summer with scientists and engineers who are recognized leaders in the field. You'll be part of a research team working on a project in the exciting field of nanoscale science and engineering. The program also includes regular group meetings, laboratory tours, an ethics-in-science workshop, a public speaking workshop, and a field trip to Argonne National Laboratory. There are social activities scheduled as well, including the mid-program lakeside picnic. At the end of the program, participants present their work at the closing symposium and submit a written report. Subsequently, the written reports are peer-reviewed and considered for publication in Nanoscape – the first undergraduate research journal devoted to nanoscale science and engineering. The REU program is a unique experience providing participants with a glimpse into the life of a scientific researcher and opportunities to meet and work with world-renowned scientists. To be eligible for the REU program you must be an undergraduate and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, majoring in the physical sciences or engineering, with at least one year left to complete your degree. Applicants are selected based upon academic achievements and scientific interests. Efforts are also made to offer these opportunties to students from smaller schools where research equipment and opportunities might not be available, and to encourage participation by young women and minorities.
