| Description: | Position Description: The Great Lakes WATER Institute is an environmental research unit of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Located on Lake Michigan, its scientists work to understand aquatic environmental sciences in an interdisciplinary setting using both traditional and highly technological approaches. Students are educated in 'bench science' working side by side with active research scientists. Intern benefits: The 2008 program is 10 weeks (09 June - 15 August) with a $4000 stipend, one round-trip travel, nice dorm-style housing with kitchenette and A/C, a respectable resume item, and networking opportunities. Intern Qualifications: Undergraduates to remain enrolled in Fall 2008, primarily current Juniors are eligible. Majors in sciences, mathematics, and engineering with interest in aquatic environments (marine and freshwater biology, chemistry, geology, robotics) are the target audience. Must be a US Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or from Puerto Rico. Application includes an essay, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Internship Description: We offer an NSF-funded aquatic science (marine and freshwater) research internship in which the student and mentor develop a research project aligned with active research programs in the laboratory. The student will learn techniques and concepts necessary for execution of the project, collect field samples as appropriate (Lake Michigan and adjacent water bodies), conduct the analytical component, calculate and interpret the results, and present written, oral, and poster offerings.
