| Description: | Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Engineering Program for summer 2008 is a National Science Foundation funded REU (Research Experience for Undergraduate) Program. Recent years have seen dramatic growth in the development and application of biomedical engineering in medicine and health care. Exciting examples include the development of non-invasive tissue imaging, such as MRI, neural engineering and prosthetics, new biomaterials and tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and implantable sensors, while the impact of new nanotechnologies is only just beginning. The 10-week summer REU program has 3 components: 1) Research Project, 2) Seminar Series, and 3) Social Activities. The three components will provide numerous opportunities for interaction and collaboration between the undergraduate student researchers and their mentors, graduate students, and with BME research staff. Much of the students' time will be spent on the research, immersed in the projects and research group activities. Research areas include biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, imaging, and neural engineering. Students will also participate in a seminar series consisting of a variety of topics, student presentations about their research, and guest speakers discussing career opportunities. REU students will be introduced to many of the social and cultural activities in the Cleveland area |
