| Description: | The UCR Bioengineering Research Institute for Technical Excellence (BRITE) will host 16 rising junior and senior undergraduates this year for a 10-week research experience. With a goal of helping students gain the skills and confidence to become independent researchers and make better career decisions, the experience focuses on intensive and direct contact with a large number of faculty and their graduate students through a series of pre-research lectures, hands-on projects, weekly seminars and workshops, industry field trips, and social activities. The NSF REU site is led by the Bioengineering Professor Victor Rodgers and includes 16 other professors from seven different departments who offer a variety of research topics in the general field of bioengineering, ranging from genomic, proteomic and metabolic patterns in cells to biomedical imaging. The students will be lectured on a range of research and career issues, and spent time in the professors' research labs gaining hand-on experience. Some of the available exciting research topics include cell membrane electromechancis, microfluidic devices for bacterial sensing, construction of nanoliter-volume NMR micocoil probes, impact of metabolic stress on bacterial surface chemistry, and video observation of biological systems. |
