| Description: | The University of Arkansas microEP Graduate Program will host a NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site based in micro/nanoscience research in materials, processing, and devices. The ten week summer 2008 site will be the eigth year of our REU program, will directly host about 16 students. This REU is part of a combined effort by six locally and/or NSF funded REU sites currently operating on our campus. All students from these six programs participate in coordinated programs and share a common dorm for the summer. This gives our REU students a community of about seventy undergraduate summer researchers with which to interact. Participants of the 2008 microEP REU Program will arrive on campus on May 18, 2007. Students will make travel plans to leave campus on Friday, July 25, 2007. The REU funding includes support for such things as the Dallas Road Trip to visit semiconductor industry plants (and spend a second day at Six Flags and the like), for including REU students in an ethics graduate class during their stay, and becoming part of a complementary Research Experience for Teachers program. Many other activities are included in the REU to broaden and enrich the REU experience on site and can be found fully described on our web site. At the end of the summer, we have found that many lasting friendships have been formed between students within the microEP REU and between the the different research programs. We look forward to meeting new students attracted to our campus through these undergraduate summer programs, and to the possibility of these students continuing their friendships on our campus in their future graduate education programs. This microEP REU site uses several criteria in selecting its applicants. We encourage students from all educational institutions to apply (including institutions where undergraduate research opportunities are not as easily obtained as at institutions offering MS and PhD degrees). We have enjoyed in our pools of prior applicants and selected students individuals from the west and east coasts of our country (and on to Puerto Rico), and from Wisconsin in the north to Louisiana in the south. We have had students from all kinds of engineering, physics, chemistry, material science, math, and other majors apply and be selected to our program. While our program gives some priority to students closest to entering graduate school, almost half of our participants to date have participated as rising juniors (and even two rising sophomores). The NSF allows REU sites to spend direct REU funds on only US Citizens, US Nationals, or Permanent Residents. We do have a very limited number of REU positions for students outside these categories through specific research grants for very highly qualified and motivated students interested in micro and nanotechnology. Applicants are asked to indicate their citizenship status in the proper field of the application form, and students that do not qualify for direct REU site funding will considered on a ""funding available"" basis. The unifying themes of successful applicants are twofold. First, successful applicants must exhibit evidence through their application materials that they have a strong likelihood of success in graduate school. Second, the application material and phone interviews must show that they have a sincere interest in the microEP graduate program as a potential home for their graduate education - an education designed to prepare them for lifelong career success in the broad field of micro and nanotechnology as applied to electronic and photonic materials and devices. |
