| Description: | The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Oceanography (SURFO) program at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island is an 11-week program designed primarily for science students who will have just completed their junior year. The program can include lab work, data analysis, instrumentation development, dynamical modeling, or a research cruise. Summer Fellows may be involved in projects related to: Physical, Biological, Chemical and Geological Oceanography; Geophysics/Geodynamics; Atmospheric Chemistry/ Meteorology; and Remote Sensing / Ocean Engineering. SURFO students will be paired with a GSO faculty member and a graduate student mentor to conduct original research in one of several fields of Oceanography. In addition to the research project, the SURFO participant is required to: Complete a written report describing the project; give a 15-minute oral presentation of the project; participate in some component of a research cruise; and attend a twice-weekly oceanographic seminar series designed for the SURFOs. An interdisciplinary oceanographic seminar series, designed specifically for the SURFO program, will provide participants with a view of the wide range of potential research fields and opportunities in Oceanography. Some of the seminar topics include: An introduction to Oceanography and the various sub-disciplines; Various ""Hot Topics"" in Oceanograph; Techniques for delivering effective oral presentations and written reports; Measurements techniques in Oceanography; Philosophy of science and issues relating to ethics in science; Potential careers in Oceanography In addition to gaining valuable research experience at a renowned oceanographic institution in a very picturesque setting, the SURFO participant may also receive: Reimbursement of travel costs to and from Rhode Island and a modest stipend to cover living expenses. Accommodations in a residential setting within walking distance of the Bay Campus is also available. |
