| Description: | Now in its 27th year, the Physics REU program at the University of Notre Dame provides opportunities for Physics students to experience research first-hand, under direct supervision of faculty mentors. Research projects are available in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, biophysics, cosmology, high-energy physics, high-temperature superconductivity, nuclear physics, physics education, and semiconductor physics. In addition, the program encompasses weekly research seminars, research presentations by the participants, development of a research logbook, writing a research report, fields trips to nearby national laboratories, a machine shop course, a computer programming course, ethics workshops, and ample social and recreational opportunities. The 2012 program will begin on May 27th and will run for 10 weeks. Selected students will receive a $4,700 stipend, free campus accommodation, and round-trip travel to Notre Dame. Students who are in groups that are traditionally underrepresented in sciences (women, members of underrepresented minorities, and those with disabilities) are particularly urged to apply. |
