| Additional Information: | Applications will be accepted from U.S. citizens and permanent residents enrolled in either a two- or four-year college with an undergraduate major in the biological sciences or related field. Preference will be given to students that have completed a microbiology course with a laboratory (4 credits), two semesters of inorganic chemistry with lab (8 credits), English composition (3 credits) and a minimum of college algebra or biostatistics (3 credits). Students graduating in May/June 2012 are not eligible. A complete application includes a one page career essay, transcripts, and one letter of recommendation from faculty with full-time appointments in science, technology, engineering, and math. The career or professional statement is a very important part of the application. We recommend consulting the Eduers website for tips on preparing an outstanding statement. It is also a good idea to ask the professors that are going to provide letters of recommendation to review your statement. Please look over the recent publications of the individuals selected as mentors. Students may use Google Scholar to find these publications. Be sure to mention in your statement that you reviewed these publications. The selection committee knows that applicants may not understand everything in a mentor's publications, but will be impressed by the additional effort. Applicants may also submit examples of class projects, prior lab and research experience. (These materials are not required.) REU students must have proof of medical insurance. Students without medical insurance must purchase a temporary policy from a company licensed in Nevada. |
