| Description: | A 10-week summer research training program for undergraduates that focuses on a wide range of microbiological phenomena. The program integrates the application of state-of-the-art genome-based technologies for fundamental and applied research projects in microbiology. Fundamental: origin of life, environmental limits of life, roles in biosphere, basic cellular processes, cell-cell communication and multi-cellular structures, quorum sensing, development of epidemics, mechanisms of pathogenicity, host-pathogen interaction, ecology, and geomicrobiology. Applied: production of biofuels and chemicals, bioremediation, development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics, and detection and prevention of microbial contamination in the food supply.
