| Description: | The University of Nebraska hosts a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) entitled Quantum and Spin Phenomena in Nanomagnetic Structure. The MRSEC is funded by the National Science Foundation and involves faculty and students from Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering in state-of-the-art research on nanoscale magnetic materials. We are seeking two pairs (one professor and one undergraduate student per pair) from four-year colleges or universities to become engaged in this research during the summer of 2007. The selected Professor/Student pairs will become involved in one of the following research thrusts: • Magnetic interactions in patterned nanostructures • Magnetism and applications of cluster-assembled structures • Electronic structure and nanomagnetic studies of interfaces and heterostructures • Quantum conductance and magnetoresistance in nanocontacts • Novel ferromagnetic/organic ferroelectric heterostructures • "Seed" thrusts in - fabrication of carbon nanotube spintronic transistors, - electronic structure of magnetic clusters and nanotubes, and - preparation, characterization and fundamental thermodynamic properties of nanocluster ensembles. |
| Stipend: | Student $350/week (max. 10 weeks), professorial member 1/9th of his/her academic year salary per month (max. two months) |
