| Description: | San Francisco State University (SFSU), an urban university serving a highly diverse student population. SFSU recently established an REU site with a focus in the areas of ecological and evolutionary developmental biology for undergraduate students, particularly underrepresented minorities (URMs). This program will engage 8 students from surrounding universities each year in a 10-week research-intensive summer experience. Bringing together an exceptionally diverse team of faculty researchers with active extramurally-funded research labs--many of which are located at SFSU's marine station, the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC). The primary goals of our program are to provide research training for students and to encourage them to complete their undergraduate degrees and to consider graduate-level training and careers in the sciences. The program will include an intensive 2-week lab/lecture/field methods course, an 8-week professional development seminar, original research projects designed and conducted by students in the laboratories of their faculty research mentors, a variety of networking activities, and a campus-wide research conference at which students will present their research projects to the broader community. |
