NSF Solar Physics REU at SAO
|Primary Institution:||Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory|
|Job Duration:||10 weeks|
|Class Requirement:||Completed Freshman Year
|Citizenship Requirement:||U.S. Citizen
|Discipline(s):||Astronomy; Astrophysics; Gravitation
Fluid Dynamics and Gases
Plasmas and Beam Physics
|Description:||We offer a 10 week research internship on projects relating to Solar and Heliospheric Physics. Students have a range of projects from analyzing satellite data to performing model calculations. Students study the dynamic Sun from the high-energy particles in the solar wind to the quiet Sun and its relation to dynamo theory. We understand that Solar Physics is a combination of many sub-disciplines, fluid dynamics, atomic physics,plasma physics, astronomy, etc. so basic physics courses are a pre-requisite but solar specific physics will be taught throughout the summer.
Students will be provided housing and a stipend as well as reimbursement for travel. Students also have the opportunity to attend a science conference during the school year if their schedule and funding permit.
