| Description: | REU students will be exposed to the numerous mechanisms that microorganisms exploit to contribute to the biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. Potential research projects include the investigation of microorganisms from habitats as diverse as, hot springs, the deep terrestrial subsurface, hypersaline lakes, arid soils, and ephemeral water resources. Alternatively, students may choose to explore either the mechanisms of magnetotaxis, microbial adaptation to stressful and nonhost environments, or the dynamics between primary producers and consumers. |

| Additional Information: | Applications will be accepted from U.S. citizens and permanent residents enrolled in either a two- or four-year college with an undergraduate major in the biological sciences or related field. Preference will be given to students that have completed a microbiology course with a laboratory (4 credits), two semesters of inorganic chemistry with lab (8 credits), English composition (3 credits) and a minimum of college algebra or biostatistics (3 credits). Candidates must provide a statement clearly describing their research interests. Two letters of recommendation from science instructors are required. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted and may be received by mail or electronic mail. Students graduating in May/June 2009 are not eligibile. |
