| Description: | The University of Nebraska hosts a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) entitled Quantum and Spin Phenomena in Nanomagnetic Structure. The MRSEC involves faculty and students from Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering in state-of-the-art research in nanoscale magnetic materials, and offers many opportunities for scientists and students to become involved. We are seeking two pairs (one professor and one undergraduate student per pair) from four-year colleges or universities to become engaged in this research during the summer of 2009. Summer stipends will be provided, and it is anticipated that the collaboration will continue during the 2009/2010 academic year. The selected Professor/Student pairs will become involved in one of the following research thrusts: • Novel magnetic clusters and cluster-assembled nanocomposites • Magnetic nanostructures controlled by external stimuli • Ultra-high-sensitivity magnetometry of nanostructures • Self-assembled magnetic nanostructures • Magnetization dynamics of nanomagnetic structures • Electrically-controlled exchange bias and novel piezomagnetic materials • Ferroelectric and multiferroic tunnel junctions • Electron and spin transport in magnetic nanojunctions • "Seed" thrusts in fabrication of ferromagnetic nanospirals, electronic DNA detection via magnetic nanoparticle preconcentration, and tunable magnetic tunnel junction with optical output. |
