| Description: | Each year, the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF) brings 10-15 outstanding students to Boston University for a 10-week faculty-mentored intensive research experience. Students receive a stipend, research supplies allowance, a travel subsidy, and housing in a BU apartment during the program. As part of the program, participants also attend a series of summer enrichment workshops (topics range from laboratory safety to research ethics to scientific writing). At the conclusion, students give a 10-15 minute talk about their research to an audience consisting of their peers, other students, faculty, staff, and invited guests. SURF is designed to promote access to graduate education to talented undergraduate students, especially among underrepresented minorities. These fellowships provide research projects supervised by Boston University faculty in engineering, math, computer science, and in the biological, physical, and social sciences. SURF is sponsored by the Boston University Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, the National Science Foundation, and the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. Collectively, institutions in the Northeast Alliance are working to promote increased access to their graduate programs for underrepresented minority students. |
