| Description: | The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Gaithersburg, MD Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program is for students majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering. Students conduct a research project under the direct supervision of a NIST scientist. SURFing is a partnership, supported by NIST, NSF, and the participating universities. The SURF Program lasts for 11 weeks and is anticipated to run from May 26 to Aug. 7, 2009. The student receives a stipend of $4000 for the 11 week program, and the SURF Program also pays for housing in a nearby hotel and round-trip travel for non-locals. Any undergraduate student may participate. Selection is competitive and based on a ranking of student application packages. Approximately 130 SURF Fellows will be selected in 2009.
