| Description: | Maryland Sea Grant, with funding from the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, supports 14 undergraduates to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay -- the program is especially designed for majors in biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, engineering, mathematics and marine and environmental science. During the 12-week program each student will work with an advisor on an individual research project at either the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's (UMCES) Chesapeake Biological Laboratory at Solomons, Maryland or Horn Point Laboratory, at Cambridge, Maryland. Research areas include: • estuarine processes • fisheries • benthic environment • biogeochemistry • physical oceanography • submerged aquatic vegetation • contaminants • chemical oceanography • molecular biology • coastal technologies • modeling Applicants must have completed two years of study toward a bachelor's degree, preference is given to rising seniors. Students must be undergraduates in the Fall 2009 and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or its possessions. The program is particularly interested in applications from underrepresented groups in STEM disciplines. |
