| Description: | Ten science, engineering, and mathematics undergraduates will be awarded 2005 summer internships to conduct guided research in marine science. Students between their junior and senior years will receive preference. Interns will work with faculty and research staff in a graduate student atmosphere on a research topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology, marine geology, or marine biochemistry. Interns will work semi-independently on a project designed by the intern and assigned faculty adviser (Marine Biology, Oceanography, Physical Ocean Science & Engineering) and present written and oral reports at the end of the summer. The program will run for 10 weeks (June 6-August 12). Interns will receive one credit and will be expected to attend weekly seminars presented by faculty and research staff. The program will take place at the University of Delaware's Graduate College of Marine Studies Hugh R. Sharp Campus in the resort community of Lewes. This modern campus is located on the shores of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Research and teaching facilities are available in Lewes, which is linked by computer and interactive TV to the main campus in Newark. Dormitory facilities provide housing for up to 36 visitors, with kitchen facilities available for food preparation. Student support includes a $3,300 stipend, dormitory fee, tuition for the one-credit course, and travel assistance for the 10-week session. The 2005 Marine Sciences Summer Intern Program is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences. |
