I have not had a chance to look at that book, but for clear explanations, while maintaining mathematical rigor, I can recommend the following book: Gravitation.

It goes all the way through graduate level, but starts with vectors and builds the necessary tensor calculus.  The first few chapters are devoted to world lines and special relativity.

For a cursory view of most subjects with simple to understand explanations, I can also recommend the Usenet Physics FAQ.
