The experimental HEP group of UB is member of nationwide QuarkNet since 2006. This summer UB QuarkNet held a week-long summer workshop during 09/18/08-09/22/08 at the UB Department of Physics. We had five teachers participating in the workshop. Three of the teachers are from Buffalo area public schools, whereas two of them teach in local private schools: Nicols School and Nardin Academy. Nardin Academy is a girls-only school with physics teacher, Ms. Ann Casper, being member of UB QuarkNet center since summer 2007.
During this year's UB QuarkNet workshop, the mentors of the center, Prof. La Lashvili and Prof. Avtandyl Kharchilava gave several lectures about status of LHC, and plans for analysis of early data at CMS. One of the lectures was also devoted to dissecting Dzero analysis ("ZZ pair production") note. This gave teachers a good overview of issues and steps involved in analysis of data at hadron colliders. UB Ph.D. student, Kenneth Smith, also gave a presentation about FNAL, its LHC Physic Center (LPC) and Remote Operation Center (ROC). This is intended as an introduction for possible future participation of the teachers in LHC operational activities at FNAL's ROC. Finally, teachers and mentors spent some time at Nicols School, which is our latest recipient of CRMD. There we have tested CRMD, took some data and uploaded it to QuarkNet e-Lab site.
Among planned activities this year are: QuarkNet meeting in North Tonawanda High school with an introductory lectures about HEP for the school students; and work on development of LHC4UnMe Podcast about the progress of LHC and its detectors by our lead teacher, David McClary.
