Goals of the UNCA 9-12 Physics Licensure Program
• To structure and interpret the concepts, ideas and relationships in Physics and other sciences that are needed to advance student learning
• To engage students in activities to define values, beliefs, and assumptions inherent to the creation of scientific knowledge within the scientific community and contrast science to other ways of knowing
• To engage students regularly and effectively in science inquiry and communication skills in Physics and other sciences
• To relate Physics and other sciences to the daily lives and interests of students
• To create a community of diverse learners who can construct meaning from science experiences in Physics and other sciences
• To develop and apply a coherent focused curriculum that addresses the needs, abilities and interests of students in Physics and other sciences
• To relate Physics and other sciences to the community, improving practice through personal actions, education and development
• To plan effective lessons in teaching Physics and other sciences which apply knowledge of the growth and development of adolescents and young adults at the secondary level
• To utilize the unique opportunities and resources available at the secondary level
• To be committed to working with young adults at the secondary level
There are two required components to the 9-12 Physics Licensure program:
• Baccalaureate degree in Physics with teacher licensure at UNCA (or its equivalent if transfer or post-baccalaureate).
• Completion of the Education, Psychology, and other courses outlined in this brochure, and all other Education Department requirements, in accordance with the Policy and Procedures Manual and current UNCA Catalog.
