We have had strong efforts in the scientific training of elementary and middle school teachers through their required participation in our PHSC 112 (Lec, Lab) course (1000 students/yr, 2/3 intending to be teachers, focused on laboratory interactions and experiences, and attentive to PER results. Similarly, we have worked with the Science Education Dept. (Laura Henriques, Chair) to mutually nuture physics majors interested in teaching HS physics. We have an active SPS organization in which we address the challenges of teaching physics. We believe PTEC membership can strength these efforts, and help more faculty realize the advantages of preparing and mentoring future teachers of physics.
