| Description: | The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will sponsor a two-year program in laboratory research* and classroom inquiry starting in June 2011. *No prior scientific research experience is necessary. All secondary science teachers from the tri-county area are eligible to apply for this program, which is designed to engage four secondary science teachers. Program Timeline Teachers will be required to attend two summer sessions, two meetings per quarter during two academic school years, concluding with a Tri-County Spring Workshop for Science Teachers. First Year Summer 2011 – June 20 to July 29 Stipend - $4,500 Teachers will spend six weeks on campus at UCSB working in a lab research group. Fall 2011 – Spring 2012 - Academic year meetings Stipend - $1,000 Throughout the first academic year, the group of teachers will meet once a quarter with project coordinators, scientists and education specialists to explore ways to incorporate scientific research methods into the K12 science curriculum. Second Year Summer 2012 – (Dates TBA) Stipend - $3,000 Teachers will return to campus for four weeks to work in collaboration with other teachers as well as a science educator and researcher, to develop interactive curricular materials for their classrooms. Fall 2012 – Spring 2013 Stipend - $1,500 During the second academic year, the groups will meet approximately once a month to refine their curricular materials and prepare a tri-county workshop for science teachers. |
