| Description: | Dr. Gregory Rohrer, professor of Material Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, has provided to a number of high school teachers the availability of an internship program at Carnegie Mellon over the summer months. The objective of this internship is to assist the high school teacher in integrating Material Science and Engineering related curricula in the high school teacher's physics, chemistry and science/math classes. The teachers involved have spent 4 weeks developing a laboratory experiment, and/or courseware that illustrate some fundamental principle of Material Science that will be used in conjunction with their curriculum. Continuing education is essential in all professions and the teaching profession is no exception. With the completion of the internship, the teachers involved will be awarded 120 hours of ACT 48 credit. In addition, the internship will have a $1000 budget for materials to complete the laboratory and/or courseware activity (to be used by August of the summer internship), and an additional $1000 for the following year to replenish any expendables as needed (an explanation discussing the usage of the money must accompany the request). The teachers will be awarded a $6000 stipend for their work. Being a professional, the teacher's schedule is flexible and the objective is the completion of the task. A weekly meeting will be held discussing the progress of the teachers work. Facility space is available at Carnegie Mellon, but as history has shown, many teachers have worked in their school environment (classroom), at home, and at various libraries. There is NO sign in sheet, NO clock to punch in. You, the teacher, are responsible to meet the needs of the project.
