| Description: | The Research Experience for Science Teachers (REST) Program, which originated at Northwestern University in 1993, provides middle school, high school and college science teachers the opportunity to participate in materials-related research, develop a network of scientific colleagues, learn the latest scientific and technological developments, and discover ways to transfer this knowledge back to the classroom. Since its inception, the program has positively influenced a significant percentage of science teachers in the Chicago area as well as teachers from Nebraska, Louisiana, and southern Illinois. On the first day, participants receive an orientation of the program, the campus, and safety procedures in the laboratory. Under the guidance of Northwestern faculty, postdoctoral, and graduate student mentors, each participant focuses on a research project and conducts laboratory experiments. Teachers present their progress weekly to the group and the faculty program director. Group events, such as the Chicago day trip, beach picnic, facility tours, and special seminars provide opportunities for networking and socialization with fellow participants and mentors. At the end of the program, participants present their research at a closing symposium and submit their final research reports. |
