| Description: | The participating teachers will work as research teams under the guidance of DEP staff scientists. This program is designed for science teachers of grades 5 - 9. Research problems will be primarily in the field of analytical chemistry and forensics. The teachers will learn how to apply advanced instrumental techniques, including gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence and a 2 million volt Van de Graaff particle accelerator. In addition, participants will hear Argonne scientists discuss their latest research projects and results. At the same time as they conduct research, the teachers will develop ways in which to use their experience at Argonne to more effectively teach science at school. Teachers will be shown how relatively inexpensive calculator-based instruments can be used to make the same types of measurements as those they are carrying out with the expensive instruments found at Argonne. At the conclusion of the four-week summer program, the teachers will present oral and written reports and may apply to the Department of Energy for grants to support the testing of new science education ideas in their classrooms. Follow-up sessions will be scheduled during the academic year at which participating teachers will receive updates on current Argonne research topics and will discuss the impact that their experience has made within their classrooms. |
